Zakiya’s family came originally from Sindh. Her father's family did batik, and her mother's side did bandhani. Zakiya's father treated boys and girls equally, and supported Zakiya's education. In school, Zakiya excelled in drawing, reading, English, writing, elocution, and general knowledge. In 11th standard she was named Student of the Year, and received 2nd prize at the District level for Gujarati reading. Design is Zakiya’s passion. She learned to make batik by watching, but as she was discouraged. So she made a batik studio at home. She also does bandhani for income. Zakiya believes that a good artisan bonds with her art. “Good design has instant attraction,” she says. She believes that Art is identity. An artist and her art introduce each other. Zakiya wants to take the tradition forward, make something that is both traditional and never been made before. "I want to found my own company," she says. "Bairaj is a traditional batik motif and that will be my company name - rule of women."

Zakiya learned about KRV from her cousin Shakilbhai (KRV 2009). She thought about going to NIFT after finishing 12th grade, and applied to IICD, but finally opted for KRV. In 2013, Zakiya studied at Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya. "When we think we know nothing," Zakiya says, "that is the beginning of education. Through prinicples, there are many ways to make traditional designs new. After colour class via new concepts. After Basic Design, I saw rhythm, movement, balance everywhere. Challenge takes you ahead."

Zakiya graduated from KRV with awards for Best Collection, Most Marketable Collection, and Best Student. In 2014, she joined the Somaiya Kala Vidya BMA Course. She felt this was better than a BBA, because it focussed on craft. Zakiya plans to focus on custom craft. Zakiya chose the monuments of Lakhpat as the theme for her 2015 collection.

After presenting to the SKV jury, and participating in a public seminar, Zakiyaben received her certificate in Business and Management for Artisans from Somaiya Kala Vidya on 31 January, 2015. The jury presented her with an award for the Most Promising Entrepreneur.
