Khalid was not interested in the boring lessons of school, so after seventh grade he went to Mumbai to work as a salesman. But the work was hard and the salary was low, so he returned to Kutch and began working with his uncle in their traditional block printing. Observing and seeking guidance, within three years, he understood most aspects of block printing. A good artisan, Khalid says, should know everything, from making blocks to creating designs. The main challenge he faced was lack of facilities due to economic constraints. Khalid and his father mostly did job work. Khalid was about to start job work for an Ahmedabad client, but he wanted to learn something new. Khalid knew that if you work for someone you will never progress, while in your own business- even with limited income- you will progress sooner or later. Even within loss, something good is stored for the future for you, he says.

Khalid felt that the future of block printing was bright. He thought that if something new was introduced in block printing, the craft would be sustained. He hoped to make new designs and that the prices would equal the quality. He desired contacts, clients and orders. His dream was to work hard, grow his business and get large orders.

In 2010, Khalid studied at Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya

He graduated with the award for Best Collection.

After graduating, Khalid had a solo show at Artisans’ gallery in 2012

The exhibition was acclaimed. He sold well and was featured in Wallpaper.

In 2013, Khalid exhibited in the Cotton Exchange show in Ahmedabad, and participated with two embroiderers in Co-Creation Squared.

He has collaborated with British artist Helen Felcey, and his work was selected for the Fabric of India exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, UK
