Irfan was born in Dhamadka, and moved with his family to Ajrakhpur after the earthquake of 2001. The second of five brothers in a traditional ajrakh printing family, Irfan learned printing when he was fifteen. He has taken his work to exhibitions and shops all over India, and worked with National and international designers Exposure made Irfan eager to develop his own work. In 2004, he participated in Dastkari Haat Samiti’s Lotus Links, a collaboration between artisans from India and Vietnam. He developed computer skills, and produced a CD catalogue of his ajrakh collections. In 2006, Irfan participated in the first class of Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya, His clear and mature thinking made him president of the class, and his understanding of the contemporary market earned him the award for Most Marketable Collection.

After graduating Irfan continued to grow and explore. He had the opportunity to participate in a show in UK. Active in the Australian-Indian Sangam Project network, he traveled to Indonesia. In 2013 he paired with Hariyaben for the Co- Creation Squared event in Mumbai.

Irfan’s current focus is on jali patterns of Islamic art. His Taj series has been very popular and become a new tradition. His other recent focus has been developing a distinctive range of sophisticated colours in natural dyes.

Irfan is a member of the Governing Council of Somaiya Kala Vidya. Through the institute he has coordinated and taught a number of workshops on Ajrakh tradition.
